Having multiple authentication systems allows your site visitors to reuse their currently using ID and Password. One of the best ways to achieve this objective is to implement OpenId authentication in your site. However, one of the best free email providers, Gmail, is not included in OpenId alliances and that blocks the door for those millions of Gmail users. Now, we're about to open that blocked door in Joomla using Gmail Authentication Plugin.

Here in this tutorial, we will learn how to install, configure and customize Gmail Authentication Plugin in your Joomla.

New version of Joomla already pre-installed a gmail authentication plugin. However, that default plug-in has a security related bug. Thus, we're going to use a bug fixed verison of it. Ok. Lets get our tutorial started...
  1. Download the Bug-Fixed Version of Gmail Authentication plug-in. (Download Here)
  2. Install it. (Learn How to Install : To be added soon!)
  3. Now, go to Extensions > Plugin Manager.
  4. Disable the default Gmail plugin and enable the newly installed Gmail plugin. (Check the image below)
  5. We have successfully installed Gmail Authentication Plugin!
gmailauthentication
There shouldn't be any problem, if you've properly installed and followed the steps. Now, try to log in using a gmail account. (Username must be your gmail address and Password is your gmail password.)

I hope you are ok. Lastly, we're gonna to put a message in login panel, so that visitors can know they can use gmail accounts to login to our site.

Go to your login panel module and enter the following html code in Post-text textbox.
You can also Login with a <img src="http://studioamk.com/blog/images/gmail-logo.png">  account.

And it will be resulted in,

If you have any problems, feel free to leave a message... Good Luck!

Hi Bharath,

Does this joomla gmail authentication plugin support google apps accounts? Can it limit authentication to a specific google apps domain?

Thanks!

Zachariah,

You can try out the plug-in right here.
Current version does not have any features other than authentication thru google using gmail. I will add in new features when I got time… Cheers..!

Hi Bharath…

The error occurred at CURL execution.
